How this helps us:

Cat care assistants work to ensure our cats have a healthy and happy environment whilst in our care. Many cats find living at a rescue to be a bit stressful, so having people around to care for them and give them some love and attention can be really beneficial. We rely on volunteers to help keep our cleanliness levels high so our cats are as healthy as possible.

How do we work?

Core‘ volunteers commit to help on a regular weekly basis, either in morning or afternoon slot. They are backed up with, so called, ‘bank‘ volunteers we we call on an ad-hoc basis to fill gaps when a core volunteer is unable to help, for example, because of illness or holidays.
Every week we publish the roster for the following week on the group WhatsApp and give everyone as much notice as we can for their forthcoming commitment.

What does the ‘Cat Care Assistant’ role involve?

Morning role: (usually 8:30am – 11.00 but adaptable by arrangement)

  • Cleaning out the cat cabins
    • Sweeping and mopping floors
    • Wiping down walls and cabins
    • Changing bedding
    • Emptying litter trays; washing and refilling
    • Feeding and watering; washing used bowls
  • Keeping safety corridors and utility areas clean and tidy
  • Socialising with the cats; stroking, talking and grooming them; giving them company and attention
  • Record keeping; observing the cats’ behaviour and reporting any changes or concerns

Afternoon role: (usually 4:30pm- 6:30pm but adaptable by arrangement)

  • Socialising with the cats; stroking, talking and grooming them; giving them company and attention
  • Record keeping; observing the cats’ behaviour and reporting any changes or concerns
  • If needed, helping with regular health checks including weighting; administering parasite treatment
  • Make sure every cat has fresh water and litter trays are clean; feed as required; wash dirty trays and bowls

Time commitment required?

Core volunteers typically help once a week. We ask is that you stick to your agreed slots so the care rota is adequately filled. We can, of course, be flexible by arrangement and usually can fill a core slot with a ‘bank’ volunteer provided with sufficient notice.

It is vital that volunteers turn up regularly, letting us know in advance of any absence – if you fail to turn up it will have a negative impact on the care and welfare of our rescue cats. In the case of repeated absences, we may ask you to leave.

Age Requirements

How will we support you?

Your contact will be one of the charity’s trustees who will provide you with support, information, guidance and direction. You will receive an induction into the workings of the charity and a tour of the rescue to make sure you are familiar with our feeding, cleaning and biosecurity practices.

What you can gain from volunteering with us?

  • Develop existing knowledge or gain new knowledge
  • Using your skills and abilities in an animal rescue situation.
  • Spending time with rescue cats and helping to improve their lives.

Please let us have a few more of your details. Obviously, the information you give is just a starting point since we want to make sure any time and effort you volunteer are rewarding to you as well as the cats we are trying to help: Online Volunteer Registration
